Mussel is the common name used for members of several families of bivalve molluscs, from saltwater and freshwater habitats. Black mussel is a common name for several mussels and may refer to: Choromytilus meridionalis, native to southern Africa. Mytilus galloprovincialis. Mytilus trossulus, native to the north Pacific, Arctic, and north Atlantic oceans. Mussels are an excellent source of protein, iron, selenium, iodine and omega-3. They are also low in saturated fat.
